Working with the Seevali Lane Branch Library
The Seevali Story Circle (සීවලී කතා කවය) of Wanathamulla, was formed in August 2017, by members of the Reading Club of the Seevali Lane Branch Library working with the Katha Kiyanno Collective.
Creating a performance piece
We discussed life and explored our issues, our past and the present, through stories. As there was the need for an event commemorating World Children’s and International Day for Older Persons, we put together a drama based on a storybook written by a young member of the Seevali Public Library. We adapted this story into a drama, bringing in additional characters that will allow for both adults and children to be part of the theatrical enactment.
The drama ‘Aruma puduma peni walau’ was performed outside the Seevali Lane Branch Library premises on 28 October 2017, with the participation of a mix of actors including very young ones as well as grandmothers, to a full house including the Chief Librarian and other officials from the Colombo Public Library and also from the Department of Cultural Affairs.
An exploration of a living community’s collective memories and histories through storytelling and dramatic practices.
Engaging the children while working with adults
“කෑම හොයාගෙන අපි යන්නේ
පොළොවට ඩිංගක් වත් රිදවන්නැති
ගමනක් අපි හිමිහිට යන්නේ
බිස්කට්, චොකලට් කුඩු අහුලාගෙන
බත් ඇට, වී ඇට කුඩු අහුලාගෙන
හෙමින් හෙමින් පාවී යන්නේ”
